Inner Child Work is fascinating and is really about healing the emotional part of ourselves.
In an ideal world, we would all lead happy, stress-free, nurtured childhoods. For many of us, this is not the reality. This is not to blame our caretakers who are usually doing the best they can. For whatever reason, they may not have been able to give us what we needed, sometimes simply because they were having to deal with difficult circumstances themselves.
Inner Child Work is sometimes referred to as a reparenting process. It is a protocol I often use with people who have low self-esteem or it appears from the case history that their childhood was not supportive and may well be implicated in the problem they have come to resolve.
We use visualization for this process which is really a means to gain information from the unconscious about unresolved feelings we may have from the past. We can then 'hear it out' in a compassionate way just as we might do if we were giving a child all the time in the world.
This allows the old feelings to release so that we can be more authentically ourselves.
Often through inner child work we come in contact with a very happy younger self. People have sometimes been surprised to contact a younger self who is bossy, a bit of a know-all, just wants to play or is very confident. These are reminders of a self before life events caused us to be less spontaneous. It is a reminder too that we can retrieve that old self once more.
