“I was always looking outside myself for strength and confidence, but it comes from within. It is there all the time.” - Anna Freud
In practice, the vast majority of people find that some parts of their lives work better than others. People also find they have varying levels of confidence in different areas of their lives too.
Sometimes a lack of confidence can manifest itself in very specific tasks or activities. Think about all those people you know who are perfectly competent at work yet will do anything to avoid having to give a presentation or introduce themselves at a meeting. By the way, this is very common. Sometimes people feel confident about their abilities at work but less sure of their ability to form personal relationships, and vice versa.
Many people however can feel challenged in all sorts of ways. For them, feeling good about what they do in any area of their lives can be difficult. The kinds of beliefs that can accompany this are:
Believing yourself inferior to others
Believing you must do everything perfectly
Believing your life is controlled by events around you
Believing your worth depends on being in a relationship
Believing other people’s needs must come before yours
Believing no one is interested in your opinion
Believing there is no point in starting things because you will fail
Believing you know what others think of you (usually negative)
And so on.
Having these kinds of beliefs can sabotage your best efforts.
