Desensitization is a behavioural psychology technique traditionally used to help people overcome phobias. Using what is known as a Subjective Units of Disturbance Scale, the client would break down their phobic behaviour into 10 stages and rate them on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 representing the aspect of the phobia most disturbing to them. They would then imagine each stage trying to feel as relaxed as possible.
Hypnodesensitization also uses this method but with the client in a hypnotic state and already therefore feeling relaxed, this process is much easier for the client to do.
Here, we are working with what is known as a 'conditioned response'. The client has a trigger or triggers that are linked to a fear response. By desensitizing in this way in a hypnotic state, the client builds a link between those same triggers and a calm response.
All sorts of phobias respond well to this method which often provides relief very quickly.
